Our designer’s tips on how to spruce up your student digs!

It’s that time of year again where the local city centres are packed with young students beginning their university journey.

Having embarked upon possibly one of the biggest steps in their young adult lives it can be pretty daunting, not to mention the massive change that comes with moving from your family home into student halls of residence.

As we casted our minds back to this chapter of our lives we reminisced about student union poster sales and how every other bedroom had the Pulp Fiction poster hanging from the walls.

But surely there are more creative ways to make your student digs more homely and create a space that support a healthy mind. So here are our top tips on sprucing up your student home on a budget!

Houseplants:

Great for the mind and the environment! Wilkos has a great range of houseplants big and small ranging from £3 upwards. If you’re concerned about keeping them alive then there are some amazing artificial plants available, whilst they might be plastic they’re yours forever and can easily be transported from one place to the next.

Cushions and throws:

Nothing says home like a comfy cushion on the bed and a blanket or throw draped across the foot. The supermarkets and high street stores are bursting with these but so are the charity shops!  If you want to put your own personal touch on these items then attach ribbons, sew on buttons or iron on patches. All of which can be purchased from local haberdasheries or Amazon.

Pick up a rug:

A bit of colour to cover the old worn out carpet can make a whole lot of difference to your student digs. Check out the local markets for a bargain or even apps such as Vinted or Depop.

Everyone loves a beanbag:

Make your room the place to hang out with a couple of beanbags. With the summer drawing to a close it’s worth checking out the outdoor beanbags – you might pick up a bargain and it will be more hard wearing.

Light it up:

There are numerous ways in which lighting can bring your drab digs to life. The neon craze means you can now pick up neon lights for pretty reasonable prices on websites such as Shein, Amazon and Etsy. Neon lighting adds an amazing pop of colour to any space. Fairy lights are another great accessory and if you hang them close to a window you might even get away with solar powered!
