Burdock Restaurant

We have just watched the hugely successful opening of our third venue for ETM Group at Burdock in Finsbury Sq. From grab-and-go breakfasts and fresh smoothies in the morning to casual lunches courtesy of sharing dishes, all day spaces for creative work and meetings, cocktails and copper tank beers for post-work drinks, Burdock covers a range of tastes and flavours.

UCL University

UCL university sits in the heart of Londons Bloomsbury. Its student population is truly international and the combination of these two factors provided the brief for this interesting project.

TONIK. were asked to review the catering operations at UCL and align them with  the needs of the consumer and  competition.

TONIK. developed a portfolio of  food brands for the university site designed to  entice both the student, tutor and public alike. The identities and environments created sat alongside high street concepts and revitalized the food offers at the University.

Urbanest

As part of this pioneering development of student accommodation in central London TONIK. were asked to develop a cool urban café brand for the business.

A place for students to meet, eat and catch up whilst providing a café concept open to the public provided the real challenge to the concept.

Using simple stylish materials complemented with retro graphic treatments the café provides a real “sense of place “ and has been a real success for students and public alike.

The Jugged Hare

Designed as part of the refurbished Whitbread Brewery on Chiswell street “the Jugged Hare” is now firmly established as an integral part of the Montcalm “The Brewery” Hotel in the city of London.

Our brief was to create a destination,“All things game” Pub/Restaurants the menu is firmly led by the season and the interior is a combination of traditional Victorian city pub with a contemporary twist.

A large theatre kitchen forms the centrepoint of the dining room whilst strategically position taxidermy adds to the theme and provides focus and interest.

Copita del Mercado

Time Out says it all:

"The Spanish may best be known for their ‘mañana attitude’ but maybe that’s because they are living life, rather than being stuck in the office. Undoubtedly a party nation, they really do know how to eat, drink and be merry."

New restaurant Copita del Mercado has taken these priorities and, with the help of Tonik, created an authentic tapas dining experience. Customers could even be forgiven for thinking they are a stone’s throw from Las Ramblas rather than in the heart of Spitalfields. The warm golden glow that is now Copita del Mercardo seems very far removed from the cold grey concrete shell that was the venue only a few weeks ago."

A Tonik Associates commission from Tim Luther and David Garcia, owners of Copita in Soho, who wanted to maintain the essence of the look and feel of their very successful bar. The original Copita is a grade 2 listed townhouse in D’Arbley Street. Sadly not all projects start off with such beautiful canvasses. This latest incarnation was to be created from a brutally modern commercial retail unit – with some logistics issues to be conquered before anyone could even consider colour schemes and light fittings. The end result is something we are proud of, the client is very happy with and which is already proving popular with diners; Copita del Mercardo is a new restaurant which already feels well established and inviting.” From the natural light let in by the huge plate glass windows to the various sources of creative lighting within, Copita del Mercardo conveys a different atmosphere throughout the day with several areas of interest.

Tim’s brief was to continue the themes of his other venues – and to bring the flavour of Spain to London, not only in the food but through the decor and ambience. With earthy tones throughout, using natural materials – the restaurant which opened at the start of December feels like it’s been there for years. Given a good bottle of Spanish Sherry, a speciality of which there are many to choose from, it’s the kind of place you could happily while away an afternoon, night… or both!
