Designing in the Gen Z world! You just can’t buy good taste…

As designers we’re always observing; the good, the bad, the creative, and the ordinary designs that we’re exposed to every day. Recently one of our design team highlighted the topic of the young influencer community being thrust into the limelight and how the design surrounding them often appears to be a missing piece of their stardom puzzle.

This sparked a conversation between our team, with the ultimate question being asked – how can this be? They are surrounded by and often the centre of artificial environments so why is it that nobody has influenced them about the importance of design in representing their personal brand?

Is interior design simply not a priority on the Gen Z agenda?

Have they splashed so much cash on their homes that they didn’t leave enough in the budget to furnish it?

When you look at the influencer community of today, they are young and successful often owning homes that most of us Millennial plus could only dream of. But what do they do with these homes? The reality of it is that they are often purchased to provide a hub in which they record content for their TikTok, YouTube and Instagram channels – but little to no effort has really gone into the interior design.

Take the Love Island stars for example. Thrust into the limelight at a young age, they own multi-million pound homes but the reality is sometimes when you look at their content, it looks like they’re in a white box – there’s simply no soul and no story to tell in their homes.

We live in a society that’s completely led by image, but surely it should not only be led by our own personal images – this has led us to believe that there is a complete disconnect between the image that we are selling for ourselves and the image that our interiors are selling for us. What is influencing the influencers?

As a conclusion to this, we recognise the reality is that young stardom has not brought life experience. When you look around your own home it is generally bursting with stories to tell of items you have brought on your travels or items that have been gifted for momentous occasions. This represents us and tells your personal brand story – it should never be overlooked!

There are multiple examples of the young and not so young influencers, that whilst they are known for influencing they might not necessarily be influencing in the interiors world.

Can Tonik become the Influencer to the influencers??
