TONIK TRENDS: Upcoming Design Trends for 2024

In the dynamic realm of design, staying up to date with the latest trends is crucial for creating memorable spaces that please our clients. As we step into 2024, a myriad of design trends are set to shape the design landscape.

We’ve highlighted four broad trends that will make a significant impact on the way we perceive and interact with design this year.

1.   Experiences: Crafting Memorable Moments through Design

With the cost-of-living crisis influencing spending habits, people will continue to put more emphasis on creating memorable experiences with their discretionary money, rather than on materialistic items.

For design, we anticipate seeing more daring and exclusive experiences, that remain as inclusive as possible for broad audiences. Think unique concept hotels, collaborations between beloved brands and avant-garde experiential dining. Businesses that craft distinctive and immersive experiences through design are poised to thrive in the year ahead.

2.   Gen-Z: Shaping the Future of Design

With Gen-Z, born between 1997-2010, now making up 30% of the world’s population, expect to see many more products, brands and activities calling out to their likes and interests.

Anticipate an increased focus on values such as sustainability, health and wellness, support for small businesses and a deliberate departure from conventional societal norms. This influential demographic is steering trends towards a more conscientious and individualistic consumer landscape.

3.   Restoring: Breathing New Life into the Past

In the name of sustainability and preserving moments from the past, we expect to see a big investment into the rejuvenation of antiquated buildings and furniture in 2024, breathing new life into spaces and pieces with historical significance.

The closing chapters of 2023 bore witness to the transformation of mansions, centuries-old breweries and Grade-listed buildings into vibrant hotels and restaurants. Don’t be surprised if this trend extends to more contemporary domains too, such as Build-to-Rent (BTR) properties and co-living spaces, adding a touch of unique character to modern designs.

Creating designs within the framework of yesteryear also has significant positive environmental impact, reducing waste whilst saving money and space, the benefits of which cannot be overlooked.

4.   Colour: Vibrancy and Playfulness

In the wake of Barbie Pink’s resounding success last year, the colour landscape continues to evolve, with Pantone’s declaration of Peach Fuzz as the shade of 2024. The penchant for bold and vibrant hues appears to persist, promising a colourful journey ahead.

As for design, anticipate a surge in dynamic patterns and lively colour schemes, injecting spaces with a sense of playfulness and vibrancy. The design palette for 2024 is set to be a celebration of vivid and energetic tones, which let’s face it, in January we are in desperate need of!

As we navigate through this exciting era, embracing these design trends will undoubtedly lead to spaces that are not only visually appealing but also deeply resonant with the values and preferences of the times. Let's embark on this design journey together, creating environments that inspire and captivate in the ever-evolving tapestry of trends in 2024.
